FORGOT PASSWORD PROCESS

  1. Prompt the visitor for their login, which is usually their email address. (See example form on the left.) Client-side form validation should test to ensure that the login field is not blank and contains a valid email address.

  2. If the form passes client-side validation, the visitor should be notified that instructions for resetting their password have been sent to their email address. Some, but not all sites inform the visitor if the submitted email address could not be located in the database.

  3. An email should be sent to the user with instructions on resetting their password. Typically, the email will contain a link back to a password reset form on the site. The link will contain an unique identifier so that the site can recognize the returning user.

  4. When the user clicks on the link in the password reset email, they should be passed back to a page on the website where they can supply a new password. The form for entering the new password should force the user to re-enter the password to ensure that there were no typing mistakes. The form for entering the new password should also ensure that the password entered is sufficiently long and secure.

  5. The user should be logged into their account once the new password has been entered successfully.
